The Biomimetics Lab (www.biomimeticslab.com) at the University of Auckland has developed technology that can control the movement of artificial muscle (dielectric polymers) in an intelligent manner – using smart sensing and integrated
control circuitry.

In addition to moving and shaping the material the technology can capture the energy from movement of the artificial muscle material thereby providing a lightweight small energy scavenging capability.

  • Breast Imaging - Bioengineering technology to help locate breast tumours

The ABI Breast Biomechanics team are developing a computer based framework that can track breast tissue motion under different loading conditions (e.g. compression, gravity, indentation). Using integrated biophysical modelling, imaging processing and instrumentation techniques, this technology will enable clinicians to track the movement of suspicious tissue using a realistic virtual model of each patient’s breast that amalgamates all imaging information information into a common
3D visualisation environment.
